12.3.2013

Hrvatski Telekom showcased today to a large number of guests from the economic and political sphere, D.Sc. Philipp Rösler, Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Economy and Technology of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Prof. D.Sc. Rajko Ostojić, Minister of Health, the benefits which TeraStream, the network of the future which raises access network speeds by around 50 times the current rate, brings to the area of telemedicine. The attendees were shown exchange of radiological images of several hundred megabytes between two university hospital centers, namely KBC Zagreb and KB Dubrava and a physician on another location. The transmission took place via the TeraStream network, the global technological innovation which was presented and implemented for the first time in the world by Hrvatski Telekom, together with Deutsche Telekom, in December 2012.

TeraStream is an innovative network concept which enables easier realization and integration of advanced services of the future. According to analysts, it is this very type of the telecommunications solution that will soon become the industry standard. TeraStream raises access network speeds by around 50 times the current rate, providing users with the speed of 1 Gbit/s. This new network technology significantly reduces the unit cost of data transmission and allows massification of the construction of optical access for users.

Ivica Mudrinić, President of the Management Board and CEO of Hrvatski Telekom, said on this occasion: “The fact is that the economy and the whole society need advanced networks that will ensure future growth and competitive edge. I am very proud that we in Hrvatski Telekom, together with our colleagues from Deutsche Telekom, are the first in the world to present this network of the future which represents a breakthrough in the current concept of telecommunications networks, spurs economic growth and innovations.”

“Our strength lies in the passion for innovation and cooperation of all DT Group members, and we are intent on connecting them on every market in the best possible way. Hrvatski Telekom has been chosen to lead the TeraStream project because of its high quality infrastructure, as well as expertise and enthusiasm of its employees. This innovation will help make the telecom sector and the economy ready for enormous traffic increase which we expect in the future,” said Claudia Nemat, Member of the Deutsche Telekom Board of Management, Europe and Technology.

About TeraStream:
TeraStream is an extremely simplified IP network concept that combines network technology, data center technology, and fiber optic infrastructure. This is a technological concept which offers the possibility of providing all services, including traditional telco ones (voice, IPTV, Internet access) from the Cloud, as opposed to today, when they are provided through a network. TeraStream raises access network speeds by around 50 times the current rate, providing users with the speed of 1 Gbit/s. Hrvatski Telekom was the first company in the Deutsche Telekom Group to implement this innovative network technology in order to test the concept and enhance its functionalities. In the pilot phase the network was initially constructed with two data centers (Zagreb and Varaždin), and it provides up to 10 times more capacity than earlier technologies. TeraStream is fully based on the IPv6 protocol, providing more addresses to each user than the whole global Internet is using today.
