Fastest Surfing in Rijeka

31.3.2011

Hrvatski Telekom, the leading provider of telecommunications services in Croatia, implemented a live LTE test network in Rijeka and presented the application of LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology, fourth generation of mobile networks, in practice.
During the testing, with its partners from Huawei, the equipment of which HT was testing in its network, the highest dana download rates in mobile network ever achieved in Croatia were presented.

For the first time in Croatia, a live, high-quality video conference connection was established between Rijeka and Zagreb, where all participants of the video conference were connected over the LTE network. During the demonstration, the gathered participants had the opportunity to try out some of the services that may be realized by means of this state-of-the-art technology, like web surfing, which demonstrated the speed of work on the Internet, streaming, which demonstrated continuous transfer of multimedia contents of high quality, and video on demand, which clearly showed the top network quality. Moreover, for the first time in Croatia, we presented the stick for mobile Internet that supported LTE technology in all frequency areas, as well as 2G and 3G technology.
The test LTE network is installed in the center of Rijeka at 1,800 MHz frequency, at which also HT’s GSM network operates. This frequency was selected because it can be realistically expected that this spectrum will be available for the implementation of LTE technology.
„As the innovator and leader in our area, we offer the most advanced fixed, mobile, and Internet services to our customers. We continuously invest in the development of our network, so our customers can use the most advanced telecommunications services at any moment. Today, Rijeka, and soon whole Croatia, will be able to see for itself all the advantages that this new technology brings to our life and business,” said Goran Toplek, Director of the Radio Access Networks Planning and Deployment Department of HT.
“We are pleased that we are given this opportunity to invest, together with HT, our biggest local user, into the development of the most advanced mobile technologies. We are particularly proud that during the testing in Rijeka we achieved the highest dana transmission rates in mobile networks in Croatia. We are convinced that this joint investment will contribute to the improvement of experience of using dana services among Croatian citizens, in line with the Huawei’s vision “To enrich life through communication”, said Mr. Andy Lee, Executive Director of Huawei Technologies.
Investments into knowledge and innovations are one of important guidelines of the business operations of Hrvatski Telekom. Thus, exceptional dana download rates were demonstrated at the media conference in collaboration with InTech, a young and successful company from Rijeka dealing with the model of publishing of scientific literature according to which all publications offered on the Internet are free for download.
In October 2010, Hrvatski Telekom for the first time demonstrated live the implemented LTE test network, the commercial use of which is expected in Croatia at the beginning of 2012.

More about LTE technology:
LTE, fourth generation mobile network technology, provides the most advanced possibilities for the use of services that require high rates of wireless dana transmission and faster access to applications such as video contents (YouTube, mobile TV, etc.), online games, and a whole range of applications based on new Web 2.0 standards. LTE provides impressive rates (peak transmission rates of 173 Mbps for downlink and 58 Mbps for uplink, which are 10 times faster than HSPA rates) and enables the use of all today available dana applications on screens of mobile devices.
By means of this new technology, customers will be able to exchange all, even the most demanding multimedia contents. LTE also offers the most effective utilization of the frequency spectrum. One of its biggest advantages is its contribution to the spreading of fast Internet access in thus far isolated rural areas.
Owing to high rates enabled by the LTE technology, the convergence of mobile and fixed network is becoming a reality. IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem), implemented by HT, offers the same possibility and range of services, regardless of which access network and customer device are used.
