Optical cable network at Hrvatski Telekom is the best choice for enthusiasts of the most challenging video games due to high speed, stability, and coherence of operation provided. Video streaming in 4K resolutions is not a problem, game download is measured in minutes rather than hours, while ping is lower and more stable, according to the research conducted by HCL portal, the leading Croatian gaming portal.
The test has been performed at locations in Rijeka, Split, Zagreb, and Osijek through connection to two German game servers and one Croatian web server. Upon checking the so-called traceroute, that is the number of hops from the home router to the remote server, it has been concluded that HT network on average has nine hops, which is two hops less compared with the competitor networks.
Irrespective of the fact that the quality of Internet connection can be measured in a number of ways, concerning video games HCL primarily focuses on ping, information on the velocity of the response from the server provided for the user after they had submitted an inquiry towards it. Ping is measured in milliseconds, the lower it is, the faster the communication with the server, which in online games results in enhanced gaming experience.
Two first person shooting episodes from Team Fortress 2 and Quake Live were opted for concerning ping testing. The testing in the game Team Fortress 2 showed that the average ping in HT optical network comes in at 19.33 milliseconds, whereas in competitor networks it ranges between 23 and 24 milliseconds. Quake Live testing on the second server in Germany confirmed the difference: the average ping in HT network totalled 30.5 milliseconds, whilst the competitors lagged behind by at least 5 milliseconds.
A significant advantage of optical network is the speed of both download and upload, which is of special significance for the gamers, since an increasing number of games has 4K resolution and 60 gigabytes or even more. Copper wire connections enable maximum download speed of 50 Mbps and 10 Mbps concerning upload, as opposed to optical cable network where the speed is at least double, and an increasing number of HT fibre optic cable network users in Rijeka, Zagreb, Split, or Osijek already enjoys the speed of 200/100 and even 500/250. This actually implies that a download of a 10 GB game through copper wire connection requires over an hour, whereas through optical cable 100/20 it would take between 10 and 13 minutes.
Throughout the research conducted by HCL portal, it has been found that even some more experienced Internet users still believe that optical cable connection is available only at several locations in Croatia and that is only in Zagreb, irrespective of the fact that fast fibre optic connection at HT is available in 15 cities throughout Croatia, as well as in a number of locations in smaller towns. What if the optical cable network is not yet available? A good choice would be ADSL/VDSL, since gaming testing results showed that HT package users in that network on average show the lowest ping in games.
