Museum of Post and Telecommunications

The Museum of Post and Telecommunications operates within Hrvatski Telekom, and guides visitors through the Croatia's history of post and telecommunications. In the museum, along with the permanent display, one can see museum and documentation collections, and visit the library. A museum guide is provided for organized group visits. The office hours of the museum are from 8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday and the museum is open for visitors from 10 am to 2 pm, Monday to Friday. Admission is free.

Exhibitions
Thematic Museum exhibitions are displayed in the post offices premises in Zagreb, and in the premises of other city post offices and telecommunications centres in Croatia. Together with the thematic exhibitions related to postal and telecommunications activities, the Museum has prepared exhibitions of professional and amateur artists, and employees of Hrvatski Telekom and Hrvatske pošte.

Activities
On top of its daily Museum activities, the Museum also offers professional guides for organized group visits. It additionally provides the use of scientific and professional literature in its possession and offers technical advice to pupils and students.
The Museum is also active in printing - the exhibitions are accompanied with catalogues that are published by the Museum itself.

History
The Museum of Post and Telecommunications was founded on 9th April 1953 as the PTT Museum. Its aim was to "collect, hold, exhibit and publish materials and objects that document the development of postal traffic and telecommunications in the territory of the Peoples Republic of Croatia". Vuk Simic Vakanovic, Ph. D., was appointed as the first curator of the museum. He was famous for being a distinguished stamp-collector, but also a great connoisseur of postal history.
In the first year of its existence, the Museum formed its basic collections (postal, telecommunications and philatelic), and document collections (cartographic, archives, photographs, relevant newspaper articles collection and a library).
The development of the Museum was considerably slowed in 1954 when the decision to found a universal PTT Museum for the whole state (Yugoslavia) was passed. A lot of very valuable material was transferred to Belgrade where it is still located today.The PTT Museum Zagreb was subsequently closed to the public for 45 years. After the independence of Croatia was proclaimed, the Museum became an integral part of Croatian Post and Telecommunications.
On 17th December 1997, on the occasion of the celebration of the 110th anniversary of the public telephone network in Croatia, the Museum opened its doors to the public.
Upon the separation of Croatian Post and Telecommunications on 1 January 1999, the Museum became part of Hrvatski Telekom.
